Action Plan

  1. The name: Fight Against Malaria (FAM)

  1. The Specific Topic: Our group’s specific topic is to fund-raise supplies to prevent malaria, like mosquito nets, mosquito repellents, etc. We are mainly focusing on pregnant women and children that are in danger or currently are infected by malaria in Nigeria located in West Africa.
  2. The Purpose:
We are doing this topic for many reasons. Malaria is abundant in about 500 million people around the world, mainly Africa. Every year, about 1.5 million die from malaria. Also one child dies every 30 seconds from malaria. The main problem that the world faces, is that malaria has not been researched on a lot. Every year, about one-tenth of the U.S's funds for medical research goes into malaria. We want to inform others about how dangerous this disease is and how we should donate money so a cure for Malaria can be found and people with Malaria can be saved.

  1. The Message:
This issue is important because malaria is one of the world's largest diseases that is impossible to cure without research. We want to address others and tell them about how this world is affected by malaria. People need to know the devastating effect malaria has on people. Another aspect of malaria, is that it is contagious through blood transfer and saliva exchange. In some parts of Nigeria, 100 people per square kilometer are infected by malari
The World Health Organization estimates that over 300 million new cases of malaria arise a year, with approximately two to three million deaths resulting from contraction. Malaria is endemic in tropical Africa, with an estimated 90% of the total malaria incidence and deaths occurring there, particularly amongst pregnant women and children. In Enugu, Nigeria over 100 people per square kilometer have malaria. Nigeria has the most people infected by malaria in all of Africa. The Federal Ministry of Health in Nigeria has noted that malaria leads to 25% of infant mortality and 30% of childhood mortality. 60% of hospital cases in Nigeria are related to malaria.

  1. The Goal:
We want to raise awareness about the dangers of malaria. We are also hoping to fund raise for the organization Malaria No More (http://malarianomore.org) which we are in contact with. We will throw a fundraiser to raise money so we can buy mosquito nets and mosquito repellents. We will send the money to Malaria No More so they can buy the nets and repellents for people in need.

  1. The Short-Term Plan:
We would first like to educate our school of the dangers of malaria by having a fundraiser which would be hosted in the cafeteria during lunch. In addition we will also go around houses in our compounds talking to families about the importance of our organization and getting donations which we will give to Malaria No More so that they can help. Also we could maybe also sell mosquito related products to people in Shanghai like nets for a higher price than they were bought and give the extra money as a donation again to Malaria No More.

  1. The Long-Term Plan:
We will advertise our cause on our wikis and our blogs. We will make videos about malaria to try to raise awareness and convince people into donating to Malaria No More. We will also like to contact Malaria No More and see if we can buy some of their T-shirts to advertise their cause. We might also try to make some of our own! Another good way to fund-raise is to advertise our cause to other grades using MYG nights or other Eagle Ambassador activities, with their permission of course. We also might have the chance to talk to Mr. Rosen about putting our cause on the morning announcements. This way, our cause may be told to everyone!

8. Resources:
We will need a couple of contacts, some basic materials for presenting our cause(table, poster, brochures, etc.), cameras and software to make a Youtube video, a couple of brochures/advertisements from Malaria No More, and a couple of mosquito nets, repellents, catchers, zappers, etc. These contacts may include Mr. Rosen, Malaria No More, a T-shirt making company, and the Eagle Ambassadors.
